I asked an agent to help me fact-check something I was writing about my own work. Nothing dramatic. Just wanted the numbers right before I posted.
It came back with something I hadn't put in front of it.
A 13-agent fleet. 10 skills. 511 combined production runs. All real, all mine, all from a project I'd been working on for months. I had completely forgotten it existed.
Not misremembered. Not rounded down out of modesty. Gone. I hadn't left it out on purpose. I'd stopped knowing it was there to include.
That's a stranger feeling than getting a number wrong. Getting a number wrong, I can explain to myself. This was different. This was a whole piece of my own work that had quietly fallen out of the story I told about myself, and I didn't notice it leaving.
The only reason it came back at all is that we save everything. Every run, every commit, every dashboard tile. The agent didn't have to trust my memory of what I built. It could go re-run the check against the actual record and tell me what was true.
Most people don't have that record for their own work. I almost didn't either. I just happened to be building on a system that kept one by accident.
Here's the part that bothers me. I've always assumed the risk in how you talk about your own work runs one direction: you round up, you stretch a little, you get caught eventually. Nobody talks about the other failure, which is just as common and a lot less dramatic. You do good work, you never write it down properly, and months later even you don't remember it happened.
That's not a dishonesty problem. It's an infrastructure problem. Your own track record needs the same thing your codebase needs: something that outlasts your memory of it, and can be re-run against reality instead of asked to trust you.
I added the line back. Then I built the thing that should have existed the whole time: a ledger that maps every claim I make about my work to where it actually came from, and a check that flags any new line with nothing behind it.
I don't know how many people have real work quietly missing from the story they tell about themselves, never checked, just forgotten. I do know I did, and I would still be missing it if I hadn't asked a question I almost didn't bother asking.
